Study of Ancient Runes First Years Lesson 3 Date: July 15, 2005.

This is the third lesson of study of ancient runes. REMEMBER: NO copying and NO cheating!

Third Lesson: Runic alphabets and their meanings
In today's lesson we will be learning the meanings of the runes. But we will only be discussing about the first six runes and two others today.
There are many versions of the runic alphabets. Each has variations in names, shapes, esoteric (confined to and understandable by only an enlightened inner circle) meanings and magical uses. One should not mix futharks, or the intent or meaning becomes confused. The Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and the Younger (or Scandinavian) Futhark are the most frequently seen versions of the runic alphabets in use today. Remember first years will only be discussing the Elder Futhark. The runes are broken into three sections or groups of eight, called aett (aettir, plural). This helps one to remember their order, and later, you will see, has significance in magical uses.

First the rune name is given, then its phonetic (of or relating to speech sounds) value, its symbolic image, and finally the esoteric meaning used in runic divination. Rune users disagree on whether or not to place a different meaning on a rune that falls in an inverted or reversed position. Some runes look the same upside down and right side up. These cannot be "reversed". Nevertheless, any of the runes may appear as a "merkstave" (which literally means "dark stick" and implies a "dark" meaning), depending on how the runes are cast. As I said before no dark magic will be taught in this class but any witch or wizard should be aware of the meanings in case you happen to "come across" one.

. Ok on to the runes (The chart will show what each rune looked like so you can identify with each one with the defintion also I have took some things out of the definitions due to some explicit meanings and may not be appropriate for some of our younger guild members):

Here is the HW.

1. How many sections or groups are the runes broken into?

2. Why should you not mix the futharks?

3. What is a merkstave and how is it implied?

4. Can the runes be reversed?

5. Name the other two runes that are in Freyr/Freyia's Aett along with the first six runes and give their letters.

Extra Credit- In your own words, pick one of the runes in the Freyr/Freyia's Aett and briefly discuss how it can be used magically. (not the reversed way)
